About Us

We believe in crafting wines that speak to our climate and our way of life—wines that feel at home at the table, alongside the food we love to cook, share, and savor. Because wine should belong not just to a vineyard, but to a community, a meal, and a way of living.

– Ranapratap Chegu
Growing up in a small coastal agricultural town in southeast India, Rana always loved the rural charm with lush green paddy fields, fresh produce, farmers market on Sundays etc. That picture is always with him.

Fast forward, he moved to US in 90’s, started his career in computer science and made Virginia his home with his wife Lakshmi, two sons Viraj and Rajit. When he visited a vineyard at Napa, California, he instantly fell in love with the wine tasting, long rows or grape vines on gentle slopes, the tour of the winery and the wine making. The curiosity about the wine made him learn more about different types of wine, visited vineyards/wineries from different parts of the world, food pairing and the whole experience!

He started to volunteer at the local vineyards during the entire season i.e. weeding, planting, pruning, spraying, harvesting, crushing and making wine! He also attended the local Northern Virginia community college for formal education in viticulture. His appetite in wine made him start dreaming about owning his own vineyard, planting and producing top-class wines and making his own mark in industry. In 2019 he purchased the Buckskin Manor estate, a historic property in a charming small town called Hillsboro, located at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, one hour drive from Washington DC. The region’s temperate climate and fertile soil have long supported vineyards and orchards. His first years he spent restoring the historic Buckskin Manor, clearing the land to plant the vineyard and hiring the viticulture consultants to help select the grape varietals best suited for the landscape, altitude, soil composition and the microclimate. Over the next few years, he planted various grape varietals in about 23 acres and produced his first vintage in 2025. The tasting room was planned in 2024 and set for the grand opening in summer 2026.

His love about the small-town culture and passion for wine were blended into Jiya Vineyards!!
